LA UNION’S URBAN FARMING PROJECT
In addition to working on the issues of immigration and education reform, we recognize that access to healthy and affordable food is an issue that affects the health of our community. In the Spring of 2010, we transformed an abandoned lot into a flouring community garden, Granja Los Colibries de La Unión. Our urban farming project allows us to address health disparities and maintain our cultural traditions in Sunset Park by teaching our community how to grow fresh vegetables and raise hens.
WHAT:
Our farm currently raises 10 hens and grows organic vegetables and herbs in the growing seasons to provide its members with healthy food and educational opportunities to learn about sustainable urban farming practices.
Check us out on Brooklyn Independent TV’s “Neighborhood Beat” special on our chicken coop, here!
and also a feature in El Diario, “Granja les permite mantener sus raíces”.
WHY:
1) To improve the health of our community by growing healthy food because of the absence of
options in our neighborhood.
2) To build intergenerational relationships between parents and youth.
3) To connect to the traditions and culture of our home countries.
4) To value the process of raising animals and growing food.
WHERE:
219 34th St, Brooklyn (between 4th and 5th ave)
